Germplasm Bank of Maize

The Germplasm Bank of Maize of the Misión Biológica de Galicia conserve 315 inbred lines and 304 varieties from diverse origins and commercial applications available for research purposes.

The MBG Germplasm Bank contains:
  1. Inbred lines (315)
    1. Field corn (249): Yellow (191), White (24) y Special (34)
    2. Popcorn (15)
    3. Sweet corn (51): sweet su1 (38), improved sweet su1 se1 (5) y supersweet sh2 (8)
  2. Varieties
    1. Field corn (247): Populations (220): American (18), Spanish [Galician (93), rest of  Spain (37) and Spanish landraces (43)], Portuguese (18) and other origins (11); y Synthetics (27)
    2. Popcorn populations (27)
    3. Sweet corn (30): Populations (16) y Synthetics (14)

Maize Selection Programs


Some of the maize selection programs developed in the Misión Biológica de Galicia (CSIC) include:
  • Cycles of selection for yield improvement under corn borer attack
  • Cycles of selection for improved tolerance
  • Selection assisted by moleculars markers

Or genetic resources with modified morphological or biochemical features as:
  • Divergent cycles for the length of the internode basal ring
  • Divergent cycles for diferulate content in the pith
